Reading Schools Week is fast approaching! 

In February, we’ll be marking the first ever Reading Schools Week, a five-day extravaganza designed to celebrate the incredible activity taking place in Reading Schools across the country.

You’re invited to join in and connect with hundreds of other Reading Schools nationwide by taking part in daily games and challenges, sharing ideas, and having fun with books and stories! Each day has a theme to get stuck into, with interactive prompts to get learners and staff excited about reading. 

There’s even a chance to win a free author visit to your school, just by letting us know how you’re engaging with Reading Schools Week using Padlet – the place to share and find out extra information during the week. 

Open to every school, the week is a (free and optional) way to celebrate the joy of reading for pleasure with a network of schools that have the same goals. It’s all about fun, inspiration and connection – and you might even capture some great evidence for your Reading Schools accreditation along the way.

Monday 2 February: Ask Me What I’m Reading

Today’s prompt is designed to fill the halls with book talk and get recommendations flying. To kick off the week in style, you will also be able to take part in a live virtual event with our Reading Schools ambassador authors – click the relevant link below to sign up.

Tuesday 3 February: Drop Everything and Read

It can be hard to make time to read for pleasure, so today we’re making it easy for you. Pens, papers, paintbrushes down – it’s time to read!

Wednesday 4 February: Storytelling

Stories are at the heart of everything we do, whether it’s books, films, video games, podcasts, or just catching up with your friends, we’re celebrating storytelling in all its forms today.

Thursday 5 February: Author Takeover

Our fabulous Reading Schools ambassadors, Alastair Chisholm and Nadine Aisha Jassat, are taking the reins today. Stay tuned for a bespoke challenge video from them, delivered straight to your inbox.

Friday 6 February: Reading Leadership Group Takeover

It wouldn’t be Reading Schools Week without hearing from the amazing pupils who make Reading Schools possible. Hold on to your hats, because today’s challenges are all set by pupils from around the country. Register to take part in Reading Schools Week to submit your own pupils’ ideas for consideration!

About the registration process

To register for Reading Schools Week, we recommend first making sure your school is signed up to the Reading Schools programme. If you haven’t joined yet, you can do so here: Sign up to Reading Schools.

As part of the registration process for Reading Schools Week, you’ll be asked to answer three questions. These will require a little thought and preparation, so it’s worth considering them in advance:

  1. What challenge would your Reading Leadership Groups like to suggest for Pupil Takeover Day to share with schools across Scotland? It could be anything to do with books, reading for pleasure, creative writing, and more!

  2. What’s your top tip to another school considering joining Reading Schools? (If you have not yet started your Reading Schools journey, just answer with N/A)

  3. What activity or achievement are you most proud of about Reading Schools in your school? (If you have not yet started your Reading Schools journey, just answer with N/A)

Once you’ve submitted your responses, you’ll receive a confirmation email letting you know you’re successfully registered for Reading Schools Week. You’ll also get regular updates from the Reading Schools team with tips and resources to help you prepare for the week’s activities.
