Quote: Reading Schools Week, 2nd to 6th February 2026

In February 2026, we marked the first ever Reading Schools Week, a five-day extravaganza designed to celebrate the incredible activity taking place in Reading Schools across the country.

Hundreds of Reading Schools nationwide took part in daily games and challenges, sharing ideas, and having fun with books and stories! Each day had a theme to get stuck into, with interactive prompts to get learners and staff excited about reading.

Open to every school, the week was a (free and optional) way to celebrate the joy of reading for pleasure with a network of schools that have the same goals. It was all about fun, inspiration and connection – and even capturing some great evidence for your Reading Schools accreditation along the way.

We hosted two live virtual events on Monday 2 February with our Reading Schools Ambassadors – Alastair Chisholm (Primary) and Nadine Aisha Jassat (Secondary).

Young writers are invited to enter our special Reading Schools Week 50 Word Fiction competition! The challenge is to write a story featuring a bookmark in just 50 words. Find out more and enter on the competition page(this will open in a new window).
